Adult Behavioral Health

The Behavioral Health Unit at Lower Bucks Hospital is a 27-bed inpatient care unit serving adults who can benefit from behavioral health treatment and require a short inpatient stay.

Admissions are accepted 24-hours a day. For more information or admissions, 24 hours/day, please call 267-229-3890.

Treatment is available for a variety of conditions including but not limited to depression, psychosis, bipolar disorder, anxiety and behavior problems. Patients are cared for by psychiatrists, social workers, registered nurses, mental behavioral health technicians, and therapists.
The program is also designed to educate patients and families on ways to better understand their conditions, develop healthier coping skills and create a safe and secure follow-up plan for post discharge care.

Treatment Services:

  • 24-hour monitoring and supervision
  • Diagnostic assessment and evaluation
  • One-on-One visits with a psychiatrist
  • Stabilization and management of medications
  • Individual, Group and Activity Therapies
  • Management of medical needs and issues
  • Patient and family education
  • Assistance with discharge and aftercare planning

If you or someone you love is experiencing one or more of the following conditions, we can help:

  • Harm to self and/or suicidal thoughts
  • Threat to others (including physician and/or verbal aggression)
  • Increased aggressiveness, upsetting behavior and/or agitation
  • Mood problems
  • Psychotic symptoms (hallucinations)
  • Changes in thought processes
  • Recent weight loss, sleep disturbances and/or social isolation

The Behavioral Health Crisis Center is located in our emergency department and offers assessment services and treatment recommendations and they facilitated admissions to the inpatient units.

Referrals for admission are accepted from:

  • Physicians
  • Home health or social service agencies
  • Another facility
  • Home/residence

Admissions are accepted 24-hours a day. **We are not a detox unit.

Senior Behavioral Health

The Senior Behavioral Health Unit (SBHU) at Lower Bucks Hospital is an 18-bed, inpatient care unit serving senior who voluntarily seek behavioral health services and require a short inpatient stay. Treatment is available for a variety of conditions including, but not limited to psychosis, bipolar disorder and anxiety. Also, any acute psychiatric symptoms or an exacerbation of a chronic mental illness; significant enough to cause harmful behaviors to either themselves or others. We also offer treatment for those with co-occurring substance abuse disorders, secondary to psychiatric diagnosis. However, we are not a detox unit.

The SBHU is designed to educate patients and families to better manage their conditions and ongoing recovery by developing healthier coping skills and a safe and secure follow-up plan for post discharge care.

Our bodies change as we age, and so do our minds. Seniors face an increased risk of mental challenges, including clinical depression and memory impairment. But there’s good news – in most cases, these conditions can be successfully treated and managed with specialized care. The skilled clinical staff at Lower Bucks Hospital provides hope and healing.

Senior Behavioral Health Program offers patients:

  • Individual and Family Therapy
  • Group Activity Therapy
  • Anger and Stress Coping Skills
  • Medication Education
  • Family Education

Senior Behavioral Health is appropriate if you, or a loved one is experiencing an escalation or worsening of ongoing systems of any of the following:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Agitation or aggression
  • Disordered thinking
  • Change in sleep habits
  • Poor adjustment to change
  • Wanting to harm others
  • Lack of attention to personal hygiene
  • Increased fear of being alone
  • Grief (not adjusting to the loss of a loved one)
  • Change in enjoyment and participation in daily activities

Senior Behavioral Health Team

  • Psychiatrists with years of experience and expertise in geriatric psychiatry, neurology and internal medicine lead a multidisciplinary team. That meets daily with patients.
  • Social Workers provide individual and group sessions, family counseling and work closely with patients and families to ensure patients have a safe plan for after discharge.
  • Registered Nurses assess, monitor and evaluate treatments and/or medications. Nurses provide education on topics such as nutrition and medication.
  • Therapists lead individual and group experiences using art and music encouraging healthy emotional expression. Therapists identify leisure skills that will help to regain a healthy lifestyle.
  • Mental Health Technicians assist with basic care needs and provide patients with support to achieve therapeutic goals.
  • Referrals may need to go through the emergency room for medical clearance and crisis evaluation.
